At Home with Interior Designer Traci Connell

It is no shock that a string of architects lived in designer Traci Connell’s property prior to she and husband Michael McDonald took residence. From the C-shaped floorplan to the triangular home windows and angled ceilings, fascinating architectural specifics abound. Perhaps which is just one explanation why she caught with a “neutrals and natural” strategy. “I experience like I’m surrounded by color each individual day at get the job done, and the resourceful side of that can place you in overwhelm,” she explains. “[My home] breathes a sigh of reduction. I have neutrals in my spaces–blacks, whites, lotions, hints of greens, and camel.”

Q&A with Traci Connell

What is your design philosophy when it comes to mixing superior-greenback parts with a lot more available kinds?

“We are very strategic when it will come to mixing significant and minimal parts. For case in point, if a piece from a massive box design retailer is all more than Instagram, that is the initial issue we take away from our structure presentation. Our purchasers occur to us for tailor made style and design, consequently those people swipe-and-buy decor objects have to go. That remaining mentioned, some staples and place filling products can be observed at a great deal and no one particular would know it was from a catalog!”

But what genuinely would make Connell’s home experience one of a kind is the way she expertly blends custom made pieces with the ready-produced for a mixed aesthetic that’s not only visually interesting but realistic and tough. Much more accessible merchandise from Crate & Barrel, CB2, and even Ikea get a raise beside a person-of-a-form custom made operates and other large-finish acquisitions. “It can take the stuffiness out and tends to make it genuine,” she says. “Everything is so curated.”

She and Michael moved in 4 yrs back, just ahead of their marriage ceremony, and experienced just completed the initial period of a multiphase renovation when a housefire struck. “It was in pretty rough shape,” she suggests. With that tragedy came the possibility to develop anew. Connell held the primary brick floors, combined custom made pieces with kinds that could ship speedily, and retained to her total neutral palette, even though opting for pops of color throughout—deep, wealthy tones of environmentally friendly or aubergine in unpredicted places. “We desired the interiors to be rather tranquil,” she claims. “A lot of periods when we entertain, folks provide the coloration! What they are carrying, their personalities—that was my driving way.”
